I was just reading a book on our Solar family. So, I decided to share some information with you. I hope you find it interesting and informative.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM: The family of the sun

MERCURY: The Planet Nearest to the Sun

Mercury is the first of the nine planets in our Solar System and the closest to the sun. It is named after the wing-footed Roman God. Its entire surface is airless, though many different gases surround the planet. Mercury is also a place of extreme temperatures. Its hottest temperature is 400oC and its coldest is -175oC. Mercury takes 88 Earth days to go around the Sun once, which gives it a very short year. But it takes 1,146 hours to complete one rotation on its axis, so it has a very long day.

VENUS: A Morning and Evening Star

Venus is known as the morning and evening star because it is seen in the sky at pre-dawn and just after sunset. It is named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty. It is completely covered by thick clouds. The temperature on the Venusian surface reaches about 464oC Venus is closest to the earth in size. Venus does not have a moon.

MARS: The Red Planet

Mars is the fourth planet in the Solar system. It is named after the Roman God of War. Since the planet is red in colour, it is known as the ‘red planet’. The reason Mars appears red is that the planet’s soil contains a lot of rusted iron. Its atmosphere is mainly made up of carbon dioxide and other gases. Two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, orbit Mars. Mars takes 687 Earth days to go around the Sun and it spins on its Axis once every 24 hours and 37 minutes. Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons.

JUPITER: The King of Planets

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within the Solar System. The Romans named the planet after the King of Gods. The planet Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a small proportion of helium. Jupiter has a faint planetary ring system. At least 63 moons orbit Jupiter and Ganymede is the largest of these moons. The Great Red Spot, a giant storm that is known to have existed on Jupiter. AstronomersHave found something very exciting on one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa. They believe that it has a huge ocean of water below its surface that may have simple forms of life in it.

SATURN: The Ringed Planet

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is named after the Roman god of agriculture. The planet Saturn is composed of hydrogen, with small proportions of helium and trace elements. The interior consists of a small core of rock and ice, surrounded by a thick layer of metallic hydrogen and a gaseous outer layer. Saturn has a prominent system of rings, consisting mostly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust. Sixty known moons orbit the planet. Titan, Saturn's largest and the Solar System's second largest moon is larger than the planet Mercury and is the only moon in the Solar System to possess a significant atmosphere.

URANUS: The Seventh Planet

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and is the third largest in the solar system. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1781. The atmosphere of Uranus is composed of 83% hydrogen, 15% helium, 2% methane and small amounts of acetylene and other hydrocarbons. Methane in the upper atmosphere absorbs red light, giving Uranus its blue-green color. Uranus orbits the Sun once every 84.01 Earth years. The length of a day on Uranus is 17 hours 14 minutes. Uranus has at least 21 moons. The two largest moons, Titania and Oberon, were discovered by William Herschel in 1787.

NEPTUNE: The Eighth Planet

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. The planet is named after the Roman god of the sea. Neptune's atmosphere is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium along with traces of methane. The German astronomer Johann Galle discovered Neptune. It has 12 moons. Neptune also has rings.

- AISHANI SHAH

Amazing Facts

I was just reading a book and came across some amazing facts. I have been given the topic 'Rocket'. So here's a piece of information on this topic, I thought of sharing it with you. Hope you enjoy reading!!
                                                                       ROCKETS

A rocket is a vehicle, missile or aircraft which obtains thrust by the reaction to the ejection of fast moving fluid from within a rocket engine. The name Rocket comes from the Italian Rocchetta (i.e. little fuse ), a name of a small firecracker. They are basically divided into two parts: a solid fueled rocket motor and the payload. The payload is the section which carries the instruments to conduct the experiment and send the data back to Earth.

The history of rockets goes back to at least the 13th century. The earliest rockets were used for fireworks. By the 20th century it included human spaceflight to the Moon, and in the 21st century rockets have enabled commercial space tourism.

They very lightweight, enormously powerful and can achieve extremely high speeds. Some types of rockets are: Missiles, sounding rockets, launcher rockets, thruster rockets, chemical rockets, etc.

Chemical rockets operate by expanding hot exhaust gas made from propellant against the inside of a bell nozzle, this generates forces that both accelerate the gas to extremely high speed, as well as, since every action has an equal and opposite reaction, generating a large thrust on the rocket.

Chemical rockets contain a large amount of energy in an easily liberated form, and can be very dangerous, although careful design, testing, construction and use can minimise the risks.

Rockets are used for fireworks and weaponry, as launch vehicles for artificial satellites, and for human spaceflight and exploration of other planets. People use all kinds of rockets for the same basic purpose: to carry objects through air and space. Missiles carry explosive devices to targets, while sounding rockets carry scientific instruments into the upper atmosphere. Launch vehicles boost satellites and other spacecraft into space, and smaller thruster rockets steer or stabilize spacecraft in space.

-Aishani Shah

Ketchupy Smash

Sometimes forwarded pics are also very funny. As the population of India is massive, there had to be some way to cope up with the transportation problems. With a view to find out an alternative for these sufferings of the people of India, Dr. B. C. Roy, the chief minister of West Bengal was the first person to give the idea of building an underground railway. This foundation was first laid by Smt. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India and the construction work started in December 1973. In India, underground trains are called ‘metro’, in London they are called ‘Tubes’ and in America are known as ‘Subways’. In London, metro trains have started almost a hundred years ago.

Construction

The construction of the metro trains is very complex. Engineers have applied many new technologies in the fields of civil, electrical, signaling and telecommunication. Some engineers adopted advanced technologies in he following fields for the first time.

Needs

The metro train is a convenient way of transportation. The metro trains are super fast. They are environment friendly, financially affordable and economical. They are also attractive to the passenger.

Advantages

There are many advantages of the metro trains. They carry the same number of people as much as 25 private cars do. They are reliable, safe and comfortable. They reduce the traveling time by 50 to 75% as compared to road. It decreases the noise levels and is eco-friendly. It is also energy efficient. So it is recommended to travel in metro trains.

Book Review

Here is a small review of a story I read from Akbar and Birbal tales.

-Aishani

THE WITTY COMPETITION

Once a king had announced that whoever could bring a thing which could neither be wet nor be burnt, will be awarded a prize of five hundred gold coins. Everybody was talking about this competition. At the day of competition every inch of the court was filled with people. Then a boats man presented a lotus which could never be wet but it could be burnt. A sculptor brought a stone statue but it could get wet. After that many people come but no one succeeded. At last a youth came and said that he did not have anything but he was making it in front of everybody. He went in a corner where sunlight was falling. He kept the hand in such a way that the shadow would fall on the wall. This could neither get wet nor be burnt. The king was very happy and rewarded the man and also made the man his minister.

The Secret Seven

I read a lot of books at Swagat Children Library of kidsfreesouls.com. Through the telescope they saw their friend farmer Dick's house, a party going on near by and many other things. When it was Jack's turn to see through the telescope, he saw that farmer Dick's house was on fire and a man was limping and trying to run away from there. So Colin and Peter called the fire bridge and the cops. They also warned the farmer who was enjoying the party. They all also went there along with the cops. Jack explained to the farmer and his wife how the man looked. The farmer immediately recognized that it was Jamey, their servant, whom they had sent off as he was found stealing. Jamey was caught. The police also gave the secret seven a reward for their bravery.

Global Warming

Are we all not concerned with Global Warming? Everyday we find news of earthquakes, floods, forest fires and other natural calamities. Even, man-made problems like war. We should all work hard to stop the earth from suffering. Here is a piece I just wrote on Global Warming on kidsfreesouls.com

- Aishani

GLOBAL WARMING

Our earth was very beautiful earlier. But just see it now. A lot of devastation of forests, mindless industrialization, air pollution, aviation and transportation caused due to man has increased the atmospheric concentration of carbon-dioxide by 31%. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth' s near surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation in future. Scientists have found out that due to man's sins and crimes, the world's season circle is changing rapidly. The world is getting hotter and hotter day by day. The big glaciers of Antarctica and the Arctic Circle are melting rapidly due to which there will be less water in the rivers every year. Ocean warming is making sea–level rise and coastal flooding. It is all happening because we, the human beings have progressed so much that that we hardly bother about the environment. The pollution, especially the carbon-dioxide gas which is generated from smoke from factories, cars, planes etc. is the main reason for global warming. So, if we want to live a better life, then we must preserve our forests, must use renewable energy sources such as wind and solar and preserve our nature.

My Likes and Dislikes

My Name is Aishani Shah - Online Kids Reporter for Kidsfreesouls.com.
